WB is shutting down MultiVersus claiming the ‘open beta’ is over

WarnerBros' platform-fighter MultiVersus has been available for months at this point, attracting millions of players, a chunk of whom have purchased DLC content and season passes. Now, seemingly out of nowhere, WB has announced that the ‘open beta' is ending and the game will be going offline until sometime next year.

While MultiVersus was technically in open beta, many considered the game to essentially be a released product, as it had a suite of DLC purchase options, season passes and even a professional tournament with a paid prize. As it turns out, WB was just really enthusiastic about marketing and monetising its beta, and it will now be shutting down for the remainder of 2023.

During this downtime, MultiVersus will not be accessible online, but you'll still have limited offline access, allowing for local matches and the in-game training mode. WB says the open beta “has been an important learning opportunity for us and a stepping stone to the next phase”.

MultiVersus will be getting a reworked progression system and other updates during this downtime. The game will go offline on the 25th of June with plans to re-release in ‘early 2024'.

KitGuru Says: This is the most bizarre way I've ever seen a studio handle a beta. Given that a lot of the player base had dwindled and the initial launch hype has long since died, I'm not sure the game will be able to recapture that moment with a re-launch in 2024 but crazier things have happened.

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
