AMD Radeon 780M RDNA3 iGPU delivers decent gaming performance at FHD

The ASUS TUF system powered by the latest AMD Phoenix APU, Ryzen 9 7940HS, has been reviewed. The Phoenix APU was introduced by AMD at CES 2023, featuring the Zen 4 architecture and an RDNA3 iGPU. While we still don't know everything about the Ryzen 7040HS series, the review sheds light on the performance of the iGPU packed within this chip.

The ASUS TUF A15 gaming laptop reviewed by ETA Prime comes with a discrete RTX 4060 graphics card, but the analysis focuses solely on the integrated chip. The Ryzen 9 7940HS is an 8-core CPU with a base clock of 4.0 GHz, which can be boosted up to 5.2 GHz. The TDP can be modified up to 80W, and the system is equipped with 32GB of dual-channel DDR5-5600 memory, with up to 4GB of shared memory dedicated to the GPU.

According to the review, the GPU clocks up to 2.8 GHz, confirming the rumours we've been hearing. The Radeon 780M GPU is 12% and 15% faster than 680M in 3DMark Fire Strike and Time Spy, respectively, but note that the 680M system used faster LPDDR5 memory.

When it comes to gaming performance, the integrated GPU is capable of delivering a decent gaming experience in popular games at 1080p, with an average of 138 FPS on CSGO (1080p High), 70 FPS on Cyberpunk 2077 (Medium/Low settings), 81FPS on GTA V (1080p Very High), 86 FPS on Forza Horizon 5 (1080p High), and 83 FPS on Doom Eternal (1080p Medium). The reviewer also tried God Of War and Marvel's Spider-Man, but the drivers crashed. The system was tested with Performance mode set through ASUS Armory Crate software.

Interestingly, the integrated GPU can be overclocked in this system. ETA Prime had no problem overclocking the graphics to 3GHz, as seen in the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay segment. The clock speed could go up to 3.25 GHz, but this resulted in a crash. Hopefully, more compatibility and overclocking features will be available with upcoming drivers.

KitGuru says: The Radeon 780M iGPU on the Ryzen 9 7940HS looks good based on these results. While the system has some compatibility issues with early drivers, it's an exciting glimpse into the future of mobile gaming.
