AMD Ryzen 7040 series APUs are expected to release between late April and early May

The Zen 4-based Ryzen 7040 processors were announced at CES 2023 in January. Things have been quiet in the months since then, but that should change soon. According to new reports, AMD is gearing up to launch its new generation Ryzen APUs within the next few weeks.

According to a leaker on Bilibili (via Wccftech), the new rumoured launch date for the Ryzen 7040HS (35-54W base TDP) is April 30th (which seems weird considering it's a Sunday). That would mean a four-month delay before Phoenix hits the market, whereas Intel Raptor Lake laptops have already been available for two months.

According to the same leaker, the Ryzen 7 7840U (15W TDP) is coming soon after the Ryzen 7040HS chips, on May 1st. It's unclear if the other two Ryzen 7040U chips will release at the same time as the 7840U. Unfortunately, the leaker didn't mention anything about the 7040H series.

Despite several leaks featuring the low-power Phoenix series, AMD has not officially confirmed the Ryzen 7040U SKU lineup. The company did mention that 15W Zen 4 processors are coming but has been reluctant to share the specifications. So far, we've learned there will be nine Phoenix SKUs under the H, HS, and U series with different TDP, clock frequencies and GPU specs (all based on RDNA3). On the other hand, the core count shouldn't differ, with the Ryzen 5 chips coming with a 6C/12T configuration and the Ryzen 7 and 9 chips with an 8C/16T configuration.

KitGuru says: The launch date claimed here seems iffy so take this information with a grain of salt. At any rate, if you are in the market for a new laptop, it might be worth holding off for a few weeks as new AMD-powered models should become available before the second half of the year.
