Nintendo and DeNA team up to form Nintendo Systems, a new joint venture

Prior to the success of the Nintendo Switch, there was a lot of concern about Nintendo's future in the gaming business, as the Wii U struggled to gain any momentum in the market. At that time, Nintendo turned to the mobile gaming specialists at DeNA to boost its revenues to great success. In 2022, Nintendo announced plans to bolster this partnership further and now, the two companies have set up their joint venture.

Nintendo partnered with DeNA for its very first mobile games, including the likes of Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and more. Now, Nintendo is forming a new co-owned company with DeNA for future mobile projects, known as Nintendo Systems.

The new joint venture is now active as of this month and will see Nintendo and DeNA joining forces to improve Nintendo's digital business. Nintendo already made great strides towards a digital future with the Nintendo Switch and the new Switch Online system, but there is still room for improvement to match the digital services offered by the likes of Sony and Microsoft.

As part of the original announcement in 2022, Nintendo confirmed that the two companies would be looking to bolster membership services. This all comes at an interesting time too, as it is believed that the Switch cycle will begin winding down over 2023 and we could see a new Nintendo console in 2024.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see what Nintendo comes up with as it continues to embrace the digital gaming future.
