The Super Mario Bros. Movie breaks record for biggest video game adaptation opening

After a great deal of anticipation The Super Mario Bros. Movie is here and has been breaking records left and right, already cementing itself as one of the highest grossing video game adaptations despite only premiering days ago. Over the Easter weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie managed a truly impressive haul exceeding $350 million.

Having brought in $377 million globally during its opening Easter Weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not only breaking records for game adaptations, but for cinema as a whole, managing to achieve the biggest opening of 2023 so far – surpassing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s $225.3 million.

Unsurprisingly, the film is also by far the most successful video game adaptation, surpassing 2016’s Warcraft’s opening haul of $210 million. Perhaps the most impressive feat however is the fact that The Super Mario Bros. Movie outpaced the cinematic titan that is Frozen 2 – narrowly surpassing its $358 million debut to achieve the biggest worldwide opening of all time for an animated film.

Latest figures after a week in theatres show that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is already the 4th highest grossing video game film adaptation – having surpassed both Sonic the Hedgehog films ($320 million and $405 million respectively).

What’s more, with the no.1 spot going to Warcraft and its $439 million total box office earnings, it is safe to assume that in the not-too-distant-future The Super Mario Bros. Movie will become the highest grossing film based on a video game. We will have to wait and see.
