Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Switch release “no longer planned”

Firaxis Games of XCOM fame last year released Marvel’s Midnight Suns – the comic book card-based tactics game – to a mostly welcome reception across the board. At the time, the game was promised to be coming to Nintendo Switch alongside a previous-gen version. Now, while the release date for Midnight Suns on PS4 and Xbox One has been officially dated, the team revealed that the previously-announced Switch port is “no longer planned.”

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Firaxis Games finally offered a release date for the long-promised last-gen versions of Midnight Suns, saying “We're excited to announce that digital versions of Marvel's Midnight Suns on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are scheduled to launch on Thursday, May 11. This coincides with the release of the fourth post-launch DLC for Marvel's Midnight Suns: Blood Storm.”

Unfortunately, the team revealed that a Nintendo Switch version of Marvel's Midnight Suns is “no longer planned” with no reasons given as to why. While it is true that the Nintendo Switch is less powerful than both the PS4 and Xbox One, it remains Nintendo’s current-gen machine with well over 100 million units sold. Furthermore, XCOM 2 did come to Switch, meaning the team should be somewhat familiar with the handheld’s hardware.

Regardless of the reasons for its cancellation, it is both disappointing and a relief to see the game meeting such a fate on the Switch. Disappointing because Switch owners will not be able to play the game – but a relief as the team opted not to release what would likely have been a substandard port onto the console. Hopefully the Switch’s successor sees a greater deal of long-term 3rd party support.
