Blasphemous is a side-scrolling metroidvania which started its life as a Kickstarter project. The game ultimately proved to be successful both commercially and critically upon its release in 2019. During Gamescom 2021, it was announced that a sequel to Blasphemous is on its way. Following a year and a half of relative silence, Blasphemous 2 has now gotten a new trailer – alongside a Summer 2023 release window.
Announced as part of Nintendo’s most recent Indie World Showcase, Blasphemous 2 “follows The Penitent One as he awakens in an unfamiliar land, displaced from his final resting place, and thrust back into the endless cycle of life, death, and resurrection.”
Based on the trailer released, Blasphemous 2 seems to be taking all that worked with the first game and are expanding upon it. The Penitent One can now wield multiple weapons, with both platforming and combat seeing refinements through new movement mechanics and an increased overall aggression. That said, the game’s Souls-Like purposeful combat seems to be intact.
Blasphemous was a fun and challenging title which was matched by its unique and oppressive aesthetic. Hopefully the game’s sequel manages to fix some of the first game’s more frustrating failings.
