Free-to-Play ‘Honkai Star Rail’ is getting a physical disc release

Following the overwhelming success of Genshin Impact, the team at MiHoYo managed to catch lightning in a bottle twice with their follow-up Honkai Star Rail – surpassing over 100 million players in just 10 months. In a move rarely seen by free-to-play games, Honkai Star Rail is set to get a physical disc release.

As can be seen on the retailer BestBuy’s website, a physical PS5 version of Honkai Star Rail (known as the Trailblazer Edition) is set to release at some point in the unknown future.

While it is incredibly rare to see a free-to-play game have a physical release, Honkai Star Rail appears to be doing it correctly – unlike Fortnite’s empty boxes – with the $40 package including:

  • A set of 9 gilded holographic character cards
  • Two PS5 holographic Chibi Trailblazer keychains
  • PS5 physical game disk and disk cover
  • PS5 postcard
  • PS5 game redemption code with ‘Exclusive Items Included’

Given how quickly HoYoVerse have blown up in popularity over a few short years, it perhaps makes sense that the publisher/developer would want to be legitimised through old-school means such as releasing physical copies of their games.
