Dead Island 2 had been cooking in the oven for many many years, with the much-anticipated sequel being handed off to multiple studios over the course of its development. Despite these setbacks, Dead Island 2 finally launched last week to high praise from both critics and fans alike – with the team announcing that it has already sold over 1 million copies.
Making the announcement via a press release, publisher Deep Silver and developers Dambuster Studios revealed that within the game’s first 72 hours on sale, Dead Island 2 has sold over 1 million copies – cementing the game as an early success for the team.
Alongside this milestone achievement, the team released a number of fun statistics pertaining to the game, including the fact that over 1.1 billion zombies have already been killed (averaging 1000+ per person). That’s not all, as a total of 11 million hours were played during those first 3 days in which players died a total of 28 million times (over twice the population of Los Angeles where the game is set.)
For comparison's sake, Dead Island 2’s contemporary, Dying Light 2 saw over 3 million players during its first week on sale back in February 2022 – with the game ultimately going on to sell over 5 million copies during its launch month. It will be interesting to see whether Dead Island 2 manages to hit such numbers, though considering its early success there is a good chance that it might just. We will have to wait and see.
