Sony acquires Firewalk Studios for upcoming AAA multiplayer game

Sony has announced its latest acquisition. After completing its acquisition of Bungie earlier this year, Sony has now acquired Firewalk Studios, a company formed by ex-Bungie employees.

Firewalk Studios hasn't released its first game yet, having formed in 2018, before announcing a publishing partnership with Sony for its first game, which is set to be a AAA multiplayer title. It would seem that Sony has been impressed with what Firewalk Studios is doing, leading to an acquisition ahead of the unveiling of the studio's game.

Over on the PlayStation blog, PS Studios head, Hermen Hulst, wrote: “We’re excited for Firewalk to bring their technical and creative expertise to PlayStation Studios to help grow our live service operations and deliver something truly special for gamers.”

Sony has been making a number of acquisitions and publishing deals in order to boost its multiplayer and live-service output. This latest acquisition is another example of that.

KitGuru Says: Sony's first-party studios are primarily known for cinematic single-player games but in the future, it looks like Sony will also be putting equal important on multiplayer and on-going service games.
