Zelda could be playable in a Tears of the Kingdom sequel

When The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was first announced, many fans speculated (and hoped) that you would be able to play as Zelda due to her hair being shorter in the teaser – among other reasons. Interestingly, not only is Zelda not playable, but they made Link’s hair longer. That said, the game’s producer has since claimed that Zelda could be the focus in a possible Tears of the Kingdom sequel.

As part of an interview with Vanity Fair The Legend of Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi spoke on all manner of topics – with the most exciting perhaps being the reveal that Zelda could finally be playable in the next game, saying:

“We feel like what takes the most priority is this idea of gameplay. If it turns out that the particular gameplay we’re trying to bring to fruition would be best served by having Zelda take that role, then it’s possible that that could be a direction we could take.”

Aonuma continued, “With that said, of course, because we are not sure what the next gameplay experience is going to be, we can’t say what Zelda’s next step is going to be.”

Link is a great character and serves both the gameplay and story of the Zelda franchise well. That said, it would be rather exciting to be able to play as Zelda, especially in an open-world format like the most recent entries. Hopefully the next ‘Legend of Zelda’ lets you actually play as Zelda when the game launches in 2029 (or whenever it releases).
