2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man is by far one of the PlayStation’s greatest success stories, with the first-party title (alongside Miles Morales) selling over 33 million copies so far. Interestingly, the 2018 PS4 title did end up getting a remastered release for PS5 – though it was locked behind a purchase of Miles Morales. Finally, those wanting to buy the PS5 remaster as a standalone will soon be able to do so.
When Spider-Man Miles Morales released in late 2020 as a PS5 launch title, the game’s Ultimate Edition included a remaster of the first game, bringing with it multiple performance modes, ray-tracing, DualSense support and more. Unfortunately, those wanting to buy the PS5 remaster of the 2018 could not do so, with the only way being via the main menu of Miles Morales.
Ahead of the upcoming launch of Spider-Man later this year, the first game is finally being made available as a separate purchase, with Insomniac Games taking to the PlayStation Blog to say “Later this month, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will become available for a standalone purchase on PlayStation Store. This title was previously only included as part of the Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.”
They continued, “On top of that, when the game becomes available, there will be an upgrade program for owners of the original Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 console. Whether you have a disc or a digital copy of the PS4 game, you will be able to upgrade to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on the PS5 console for $10”. Those who do not own the PS4 version of the game will also be able to purchase the PS5 remaster for $49.99 (though in 2023 the upgrade path is likely the most cost-efficient way to play the game).
While locking the Spider-Man remaster behind Miles Morales likely made sense and undoubtedly helped push more sales towards the PS5 launch title, it is exciting to see the remaster of the 2018 original finally being made available in a much more accessible manner.
