Starfield will run at 30fps on Xbox Series X|S

One of the major talking points with this current console generation has been the push to offer players as much choice as possible – including when it comes to a game’s performance. We have seen a whole host of console titles offer a wide range of graphics and performance options, letting players run their games at 40fps, 60fps, 120fps and even arbitrary framerates thanks to VRR. Unfortunately, the upcoming Xbox exclusive Starfield will offer just one mode: 30fps.

In an interview conducted by IGN, Bethesda’s Todd Howard confirmed that Xbox Series X and S players alike will only be able to experience Starfield in 30fps, saying “I think it'll come as no surprise, given our previous games, what we go for. Always these huge, open worlds, fully dynamic, hyper detail where anything can happen. And we do want to do that. It's 4K in the X. It's 1440 on the S. We do lock it at 30, because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff. We don't want to sacrifice any of it.”

Howard continued, “Fortunately in this one, we've got it running great. It's often running way above that. Sometimes it's 60. But on the consoles, we do lock it because we prefer the consistency, where you're not even thinking about it.”

In the wake of Redfall’s disastrous launch (partially due to the game running at 30fps on console), Xbox’s head Phil Spencer confirmed that we would get a concrete answer on Starfield’s performance on console during the manufacturer’s showcase. We have now gotten said answer – even if it is not what we were wanting to hear. Hopefully the game could get a 60fps mode (or at least a 40fps option) at some point in the future.
