8 years on from its initial launch, The Witcher 3 is going stronger than ever. Originally released for PS4, Xbox One and PC, the game has seen continued support over the years, coming to the Switch and more recently the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – adding ray-tracing among other enhancements to the latter systems. This continued support by CDPR has helped to push The Witcher 3 to over 50 million copies sold.
As part of CD Projekt’s most recent fiscal earnings report, the publisher revealed that 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has officially sold over 50 million copies. With such a high number of copies sold, The Witcher 3 is easily one of the best-selling games of all time – landing in 9th place between Pokemon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow (47.5 million) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (53 million copies sold).
Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that 10 million copies of The Witcher 3 were sold in the last year alone – truly surprising given the game’s age. Of course, as mentioned, CDPR have continually updated the game, with the ray-tracing/next-gen release launching late last year; undoubtedly giving the title a fresh lease on life.
With 50 million units, The Witcher 3 has now officially sold more than double the number of copies of The Witcher 1 and 2 combined. In totality, The Witcher series has now surpassed 75 million copies sold. It will be interesting to see how many more units TW3 will have shifted by the time the next Witcher game comes out. We will have to wait and see.
