The Xbox Games Showcase will stream in 4K/60 on YouTube

The E3 / Summer Game Fest season is always fun as we get to see a boatload of new game announcements, updates, release dates and more. Unfortunately, these showcase streams typically do not do the games justice due to compression on the part of Twitch, YouTube and other streaming services. For the first time, Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Showcase will actually be presented in 4K and 60fps.

Ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase on the 11th of June, the console manufacturer took to its blog to detail when and where fans can watch the show. Interestingly, as part of the announcement, the team said “Please note the YouTube.com/Xbox and YouTube.com/Bethesda streams will be in 4K at 60fps, while all other channels will be 1080p / 60fps.”

This represents the first time that a gaming showcase is being presented live in such a fidelity. One of the biggest issues with 1080p streams on the likes of YouTube is the abundance of macroblocking due to the relatively low bitrate for 1080p streams.

Going to 4K should make for a much more enjoyable viewing experience – and should stop all of the detail-dense games from turning into a blurry mushy mess.
