Square Enix says you can jump into Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth without playing Remake

The mainline Final Fantasy series has always had numbered releases, but there was never a requirement to play the older games, as each release had a brand new story. In the case of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we are potentially getting a deeply connected trilogy of titles, which would suggest you'd need to play them all. However, Square Enix claims the upcoming sequel, Final Fantasy Rebirth, won't require fans to have played the first game.

In its most recent developer update, Square Enix says it has “made preparations so that players who did not get a chance to play the first game can fully enjoy Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth”.

What exactly these preparations are is unclear. However, it will likely come in the form of a recap video that you can watch before jumping into Rebirth, giving a quick rundown of the events of the first game and where our characters were left off.

Of course, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being a direct sequel to Remake, we would encourage those interested in the game to also play Remake. The story is quite different to what we experienced in the original Final Fantasy 7 and it sets up the next phase of the story quite well. Clocking in at roughly 30 hours of main campaign playtime, it isn't a slog to get through either.

KitGuru Says: Chances are, a recap of the first game will suffice for many and if you weren't interested in revisiting Midgar, but would like to experience the next chapter of the game, then it would be a convenient and quicker option for getting up to speed.
