Noctua launches direct die cooler mounting kit for delidded AM5 CPUs

CPU delidding can be a great way to improve cooling performance and pave the way for higher overclocks. This week, Noctua is launching its new NM-DD1 direct die kit, allowing most Noctua CPU coolers to be used with delidded AMD AM5 processors.

Working in collaboration with Roman Hartung, otherwise known online as Der8auer, Noctua has developed a new mounting spacer kit. It is said that by delidding an AM5 processor, you can knock as much as 15°C off of the temperature, allowing for more efficient cooling.

The NM-DD1 contains spacers that are put underneath the heatsink's fastening bracket in order to make up for the height of the removed heat spreader as well as custom, longer screws that make it possible to reinstall the fastening brackets with the spacers in place. The hardware needed to delid a processor must be purchased separately.

Delidding is the process of removing the CPU's integrated heat spreader, using liquid metal thermal compound with a direct-die CPU cooler to significantly improve cooling performance. Delidding a CPU does void the warranty, so doing it comes with a risk but if you are the type of person that wants to get the absolute most out of their hardware, then this can be worth a shot.

The NM-DD1 can be used in combination with Noctua's offset AM5 mounting bars, which reposition the heatsink to concentrate cooling directly over the CCDs. These mounting bars can be used for both delidded and standard AM5 CPUs.

The NM-DD1 will be available directly from Noctua for just €4.90. Alternatively, if you have a 3D printer, you can print the spacers contained in the kit using the STL files shared on Printables. Noctua also has a step by step guide for installation available online.
