Microsoft Windows Phone 7 released to manufacturing

Microsoft are investing hundreds of millions into their new Windows Phone 7 SmartPhone platform and they reached their release to manufacturing phase yesterday, September 1st 2010.

Microsoft are keen to take mobile market share from big players Apple and Google and the RTM stage means that Microsoft's partners can integrate the software with their new upcoming devices. The plans are on track to release Windows Phone 7 for the 2010 end of year shopping season and they hope to offer enough of an incentive to drive people away from Android and iOS to their new mobile platform.

Microsoft have been working hard on this for a long time now and Windows Phone 7 reached its ‘technical preview' status in July, after over 1,000 Microsoft employees had been testing the operating system for months. Focusing on usability, network connectivity and battery life, the OS is said to be already in a high state of quality thanks to plenty of internal testing.

Windows 7 is going to offer Web content and applications into subject specific hubs such as ‘Games' and ‘Office'. “Windows Phone 7 is the most thoroughly tested mobile platform Microsoft has ever released,” Terry Myerson, corporate vice president of Windows Phone Engineering, said on The Windows Blog. “We had nearly ten thousand devices running automated tests daily, over a half million hours of active self-hosting use, over three and a half million hours of stress test passes, and eight and a half million hours of fully automated test passes.”

KitGuru says: This is sure to be a contender late this year for many Christmas sales.

  1. If it is half as good as the desktop platform it will be a winner, no doubt about it.
