Apple sue Nokia in the UK over nine patents

Apple and Nokia do not get along, it seems every month that the mobile giants accuse the other of foulplay, either via public statements or in the courts. Apple are now suing Finnish smartphone maker Nokia in the UK for the violation of nine patents it owns.

Reuters have stated that Apple have sued Nokia over the same nine implementation patents it challenged them with in the US. A Nokia spokesperson has said that they are investigating the claims.

The legal wranglings between Apple and Nokia have been going on for a long time now, with the first legal battle in October of 2009 when Nokia accused Apple of violating patents related to GSM and wireless LAN technology. Many have said that Nokia's losses in the market prompted them to sue over the use of 10 patented wireless standards in the iPhone.

In a bold move, Apple then responded to Nokia with their own lawsuit, accusing Nokia of infringing on their iPhone related patents. This continued battle is expected to go on for years with both companies wanting a court hearing in 2012. The U.S. International Trade Commission has said they are going to look into both sets of claims against both companies.

Nokia are still the largest mobile phone company in terms of market share anyway, however they are losing ground to Apple since the iPhone launched and it is hitting their sales, and profits hard.

KitGuru says: Nokia may very well be biting off more than they can chew with this – Apple have massive resources and their legal team are wel known to be one of the most ruthless in the business.
