Ed Boon discusses Injustice 3 possibility

NetherRealm Studios are known best for working on two franchises: Mortal Kombat and DC’s Injustice fighting game. Historically, the team has gone back and forth between the two series. Mortal Kombat 1 has broken this trend, with some wondering whether the team at NetherRealm plan to return to the world of DC at some point in the future. Fortunately, it seems as though a new Injustice is in the cards.

In an interview conducted by IGN, Mortal Kombat’s creator Ed Boon was asked about the choice to follow up Mortal Kombat 11 with the upcoming MK1 – breaking the trend of hopping between MK and Injustice which we have seen since all the way back in 2011 with the Mortal Kombat soft reboot.

According to Boon, “There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn't…We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe. So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realised, ‘Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games.'”

Seeking additional clarification, IGN asked directly whether the door was not closed on the Injustice franchise, to which Boon responded by simply saying “Not at all.”

With Mortal Kombat 1 coming out so close to MK11 (relatively speaking) it will be interesting to see how the team manages to carve out a unique identity for Mortal Kombat 1.
