Google confirmed a few days ago that it has bought search engine like.com – a visual search engine which aids people to match clothes online then purchase direct from retailers.
The cost of this purchase has not yet been announced but the latest information released by TechCrunch says it is in the region of $100 million.
A google spokesperson told eWEEK “We're pleased and excited to welcome Like.com to Google, where they'll work closely with our commerce team.”
Like.com use computer vision and machine learning technology to sell ‘soft goods' or those which are purchased based on a consumer's individual style. CEO founder Munjal Shah said “With that in mind, we've developed technology that lets us understand visually what terms like ‘red high-heeled pumps' and ‘floral patterned sleeveless dress' mean and created algorithms to understand whether those pumps complement or clash with that dress.”
Google have yet to explain exactly what they are going to do with this technology however a google spokesperson said “While Like.com will operate its Websites separately in the near term, we're excited about the technology they've built and the domain expertise they'll bring to Google as we continue to work on building great e-commerce experiences for our users, advertisers and partners.”
KitGuru says: Another purchase in the ever growing Google portfolio.
They should just buy the internet and be done with it
