Star Citizen has cost more to make than GTA V, Cyberpunk and RDR2 combined

Back in June of 2020 Star Citizen made headlines when it was revealed that the game had surpassed $300 million in funding, making the multiplayer space trading and combat simulator the most expensive game of all time. Star Citizen has since continued to outdo itself however, with the ever-growing title now surpassing the total budget of GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 combined.

As reported by PlayerAuctions, Star Citizen’s total funding has now reached nearly $600 million ($589,264,482 to be exact), continuing its record as being the most expensive game of all time.

Perhaps even more surprising however is how it compares to some of the industry’s biggest titles. According to PlayerAuctions – while not accounting for added marketing costs – Star Citizen’s total budget has now surpassed GTA V ($137 million), Red Dead Redemption 2 ($170 million) and Cyberpunk 2077 ($174 million) combined.

Star Citizen is viewed by different people in different lights. To some, Star Citizen is simply a money sink, with those still investing simply falling into the sunk cost fallacy. In the eyes of others however, this money is an investment into one of the most ambitious games of all time.

Almost 10 years after the game was originally planned to ship and we are no closer to getting an official release date. That said, with just how much money the game continues to make, it is not surprising to see Star Citizen still nowhere near completion. Hopefully all this money is going directly into the game’s development.
