Android already gaining on Apple iOS

Comscore have issued a report detailing growth of Google's Android platform. They say that Android was running on 19.6 percent of all smartphones through August with Apple sitting at 24.2 percent. This is the first time Android has been within 5 percent of iOS.

From July to August Android market share increased by 2.6 percent meaning it is running on 19.6 percent of 55.7 million smartphones. Apple also experienced some growth, climbing from 23.8 percent in July to 24.2 percent in August. Microsoft and Research in Motion are both losing marketshare although RIM are still leading with 37.6 percent. Microsoft trail with 10.8 percent.

Microsoft and Research In Motion are both getting hit hard by the new Android batch of smartphones and Apple have a strong following as well, especially with the successful release of the iPhone 4 in recent months.

Susquehanna Research analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro said: “The three-month average mobile data usage for August from comScore continues to highlight increased web browsing and application downloads as the fastest growing trends, with text messaging and accessing social media/blogs gaining. We believe these usage trend benefits Apple and Android-based products at the expense of RIM and Microsoft, which is reflected in RIM's 4 percentage point U.S. subscriber share loss from May to August.”
