Apple have released the new Macbook Air, a striking new wedge design which features an ULV Intel processor. The only thing, this looks to be extremely similar to the Sony Vaio X505 released six years ago, in 2004.
Steve Jobs said that the new MacBook Air is ‘the future of notebooks”, however Sony released the Vaio X505 in 2004 which looks almost identical to the Apple machine.
The X505 was a nickel carbon body and featured an Intel ultra low voltage processor. Like the Air it was 0.38 inches at its thinnest point and 0.83 inches at the thickest. The Sony machine was smaller than the new 11.6 inch Air (10.4 inch), but it weighed less.
The only thing – the Sony machine cost $3,000 when it was released which doesn't bode well against the $999 that Apple are charging today.
The X505 is no longer available, but it was a radical design, way ahead of its time and it was somewhat missed by the general populace, although very few could afford it anyway.
KitGuru says: Apple have the marketing power to appear to be the ‘first' with many designs, but history can tell a different story.
Sony make some great machines, but they are even more expensive than Apple (which is hard to believe I know).
You know on all the occasions jobs has moaned about people copying off him/apple… the sure as hell do alot of it themselves.
