Verizon pay out $25 million due to overcharging customers

Verizon Wireless have been hit with a $25 million bill which is being paid to the U.S. Treasury, after they were found out to be overcharging their customers. This is additional to the $52 million in refunds which were paid back to consumers.

Verizon said they would pay refunds to 15 million customers charged for mobile internet use. The Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski said in a statement that the $25 million settlement fee was the largest in the FCC's history.

He said “People shouldn't find mystery fees when they open their phone bills and they certainly shouldn't have to pay for services they didn't want and didn't use. In these rough economic times, every $1.99 counts.”

Verizon have said that the charges were accidental and apologised to customers for the ‘accidental data charges.' The refunds for these overcharges have amounted to around $53 million. Clearly someone fell asleep at the wheel.
