LG ditch Google Froyo based tablet

LG have announced that they are ditching the plan to launch a tablet computer based around Google Android 2.2 ‘Froyo'. Exact reasons are not yet clear but reports are hinting that Froyo 2.2 is not suitable OS for their product.

LG have said “We plan to introduce a tablet that runs on the most reliable Android version … We are in talks with Google to decide on the most suitable version for our tablet and that is not Froyo 2.2”. So is the problem the operating system or what LG expected to get from it ? The statement is rather vague and could hint at anything from unstability to unsuitability – although with many other manufacturers onboard for major tablet releases later this year (and in 2011) we fail to see how the software could be ‘unsuitable'.

LG Optimus One - not selling like hotcakes

Is this the first kick in the teeth for Google Android? LG are a big player – the world's number 3 mobile phone maker going on recent reports. The tablet release was set to help their floundering sales, failing to even achieve a 1 million sales target with their new Optimus One smartphone.

This leaves the market slightly more open for the raft of manufacturers set to release new tablets over the coming months. Blackberry maker Research In Motion are focusing on their upcoming Playbook tablet and Samsung and Dell have products almost ready for launch.

KitGuru says: Could this be the first sign that something is wrong with the new Android OS? Or are LG just deserting the market completely?

  1. This sounds rather unusual to me. Why on earth is Froyo 2.2 not suitable? this is what it is made for.

LG must have some issues they aren’t talking about, which is fine, but dont blame the OS. it looks to be one of the best on the market.
