Illumination denies Zelda film rumours

Following the overwhelming success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, animation studio Illumination and Nintendo seemed to confirm that more films based on the console manufacturer’s IPs were on their way. One rumour claimed that next in line for an adaptation is The Legend of Zelda. According to Illumination however, this might not be the case.

A recent statement from film reporter Jeff Sneider claimed that “Zelda will be…is looking like the next big Illumination Nintendo franchise”. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri has now refuted these claims, saying to publication The Wrap:

“I don't know where that came from. I mean I can understand how people would surmise all sorts of things because obviously, we've had a great experience working together.”

Meledandri continued, “My relationship with Nintendo now includes being on their board of directors, so I understand how people can surmise these things. But in terms of the specifics, that was just something that I've been hearing lots of reports. This is just about what's next between Nintendo and Illumination.”

Of course, we rarely if ever seen higher ups confirm rumours, especially for projects which are potentially so far away. Still, it is interesting to see what Meledandri has to say on the matter. It is entirely possible that the team wants to focus on Mario for now – after all, the first film has already made over $1.3 Billion.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Meledandri’s statement? What Nintendo film do you think we will see next? A Mario sequel or a Zelda adaptation? Let us know down below.
