EA announces Cliffhanger Games studio, first project is a Black Panther game

Last year, it was reported that a former Monolith Productions lead had joined EA to start a new studio, with its first project to be a new Black Panther game. Today, EA has confirmed exactly that, announcing its new studio, Cliffhanger Games.

Cliffhanger Games is led by Kevin Stephens, former VP of Monolith Productions, the studio behind the Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games. The studio is based in Seattle and was initially founded in 2021. The studio's first project is a Black Panther game and is set to deliver a “unique, story-driven” approach.

In previous leaks, it was claimed that the Black Panther game will be open-world, with a story following a new hero taking on the Black Panther mantle. Cliffhanger Games has not yet confirmed that the game will be open-world, as the game is still “early in development with a long road ahead”.

As reported by GI.biz, the studio does already house a number of veterans who have worked on projects like Shadow of Mordor, God of War, Halo Infinite and more. As this is a licensed project, Marvel Games will have some input along the way as well.

KitGuru Says: This is a classic recruitment drive announcement. It is still too early for the team to really reveal much, but by announcing the project, it will be easier to hire new developers and scale up the team.
