Apple are living dangerously, by recently banning the Wikileaks application from their store. Hacker group ‘Anonymous' are currently targeting any company who are cutting support from Wikileaks, and we would expect Apple to be next on their hitlist.
Apple have banned the iPhone and iPad application designed to give people access to the wealth of leaked information which has been hitting the news in every country in recent weeks. Apple have removed the Wikileaks application because it has violated their developer guidelines.
“Apps must comply with all local laws and may not put an individual or targeted group in harm’s way,” said Apple.
Hacker group Anonymous have already attacked Visa, Mastercard, Paypal and Bank Of America for cutting support to Wikileaks on various levels, so there is a good chance that Apple might be painting a crosshair on their forehead.
As yet however, Wikileaks have yet to be charged for commiting any crime so it seems hard justice for all these companies to be cutting support for them.
KitGuru says: Is this fair or unjust? if you have a view, please let us know.
everyone is afraid to be associated with them right now, which is slightly unprofessional. Dont apple block any application that doesnt abide with their developer guidelines? So they are removing it after approving it? thats not right.
Rocky you are correct. That is wrong of them to go back on an approved application. It’s not like the app is doing anything other than the application said it would. This is purely political.
If a corporation doesn’t support the Bill of Rights, they should not have the Priviledge of operating in this country. I write this on a year old Apple MacBook, was planning to buy the new beefy Air (1700$) but this news broke the day before I was going to go to the Apple store. My next phone will not be either another iphone (currently have the 4) nor a Droid (which supports Microsoft, who owns 51% of Apple and has for years – a surprise fact to many). I am pissed at Apple because it was always the simple solution, to buy from them, they were always the first company I thought of, including my router (AirPort). Now I have to find replacements for so many products, as I absolutely cannot abide this politicorp bullying!
Apple is MASSIVELY stupid to do this, because that 10% of the world that are geeks in the corner of (school, cafe, anywhere) with a Mac, are the hackers of the world!!! Does Apple not know who its customers are???
On another note, Apple has become mainstream enough that viruses were starting to get written for Macs, which was one of the main benefits of (over)paying for a Mac laptop. And there will be even more so now that Apple has foolishly been made a target by betraying its base.
shoot the messenger apple.
