Android is beating Apple Store growth

Apple can do no wrong, but the latest reports in from research company Distimo show that the Android Market had the highest rate of growth, reaching 130,000 applications in the US by the end of 2010.

This is a phenomenal growth rate of six times the number of applications available by the same time in 2009. Netherlands based Distimo said that Nokia's free applications also surged 10 fold helping their US applications list triple to 25,000, the third biggest application lineup after Apple and Android.

Much of the Android success can be put down to pro active instructional events and by offering the right tools to coders in the effort to catch up to Apple who are offering over 300,000 applications in the US.

Analysts Hendrik Koekkoek and Gert Jan Spriensma said “The high download volumes of free applications appear to attract developers to switch to monetization methods other than paid.”

KitGuru says: They still have some way to catch Apple, but the Android market is looking very healthy indeed.
