Acer reduce netbook production in favour of Sandybridge tablets

In Q4 of 2010 Acer said that netbooks were selling well and that they would keep concentrating on releasing quality products in 2011. It appears they have changed their mind and have announced that they will reduce their netbook range and limit the volume.

Whether we like it or not, tablets seem to be a money maker for notebook companies and many people commenting that Acer's belief in the netbook sector was a little misplaced last year. Acer told the IDG News Service that they are releasing new 7 inch and 10 tablets by mid year. Taiwan sales manager Lu Bing-hsian said “”They are aimed at phasing out netbooks, “That’s the direction of the market.”

Acer president Scott Lin was outspoken last year that he felt tablets would not kill netbooks, so the quick change of heart has clearly been fuelled by the sales figures in Q4.

With Sandybridge technology being incorporated into the new Acer tablets these are certainly going to be products to watch.
