iPad 2 might not feature Retina display

Rumours of the iPad 2 have been circulating over the last week, with many people saying it will feature the Retina Display. John Gruber, Apple watcher claims that this is incorrect.

A while ago, sites and publications found higher resolution graphics inside recent builds of Apple's iOS programs, available on the company site for developers. This enhanced resolution graphics indicated that Apple would be doubling the resolution of the iPad 2 screen to 2048×1536 pixels.

Gruber said “I asked around, and according to my sources, it is too good to be true: the iPad 2 does not have a Retina Display. I believe the iPad 2's display will remain at 1024×768.”

This contradicts the recent reports on Engadget, who said “The iPad 2 will sport a new screen technology that is akin to (though not the same as) the iPhone 4's Retina Display and will be super high resolution.”

Engadget never claimed that Apple were doubling the resolution but may use other means to achieve a ‘super high resolution'. Gruber feels differently.

“Maybe it uses the new manufacturing technique Apple introduced with the iPhone 4 display, which brings the LCD closer to the surface of the touchscreen glass–making it look more like pixels on glass rather than pixels under glass,” Gruber said. “But my sources are pretty sure that it's not 2048×1536 or any other ‘super high resolution.'”

Personally Kitguru feels that Apple will do something to improve the screen, it would be very unlike Apple to release a new version of a product such as the iPad without improving the display technology on some level. They certainly made a big deal of the Retina Display in the iPhone 4.

KitGuru says: Retina or no Retina?, that is the question.

  1. “it would be very unlike Apple to release a new version of a product such as the iPad without improving the display technology on some level”. It’s possible it will improve on some level, but perhaps not resolution. It’s not without precedent. iPhone, iPhone 3G and 3GS were all the same resolution. iPhone 4 upped it considerably, but that was in the face of a lot of competition with higher resolution screens.

That’s not the case with tablets, where Apple can probably safely wait before it ups the resolution,
