‘The Daily’ for iPad is launched

News Corp., the organisation behind some of the worlds leading newspapers has just launched a tablet only news application called ‘The Daily'.

While many applications for the iPad are ‘HD' upgrades, News Corp. has designed this program from the ground up, focusing on delivering the best newsreading experience possible. It will cost 99 cents a week or $39.99 a year after a two week free trial. This is easily the most ambitious newsreader yet for the iPad, especially as a traditional media company are behind it.

Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. Chairman and chief executive told other executives at an event in New York “Our aim is for the Daily to be the indispensable source for news, information and entertainment.”

Every issue will have original content, updated during the day when required and will contain up to 100 pages. The design seems to be very graphics heavy, much like ‘Time' Magazine. It also contains links to web content and can include Twitter updates. Daily readers can share links via Twitter, Facebook and even email.

Advertising is limited for now to full page ads and News Corps other outlets won't appear in the Daily. It asks for a location when you first open it but we haven't seen any information being used for localised news, not yet anyway. There is an interactive Crossword and Sudoku puzzle, for those who like a challenge on their way to work.

iPad users will not be getting an exclusive forever, as News Corp plan to release a version for Google Android, but there is no indication of a release date. Murdoch has indicated however that it might be 2013 before that happens however.

KitGuru says: As printed media begins a slow decline into oblivion, this is one of the first high profile daily newspapers to be released for the tablet market.
