Details on Bungie’s extraction shooter ‘Marathon’ leak

During Sony’s recent PlayStation Showcase, Bungie showed off a cinematic teaser for its upcoming extraction shooter ‘Marathon’. While details on the game were light at the time, a new report has now offered a great deal of information on Marathon’s gameplay loop, progression and more.

According to known industry insider Tom Henderson (via Insider Gaming), Marathon will be a “3-person extraction shooter with features that you might find familiar if you play games like Escape From Tarkov”. Despite the focus on 3-player teams, Henderson confirmed that you’ll still be able to take on others solo or in a team of two – though you will face other 3-player teams.

In an interesting twist, the game is said to feature an Oxygen system in which “all players have a limited oxygen supply that essentially acts like the match countdown timer – Once the player loses oxygen, you begin to lose health. Extracting before you run out of oxygen and health is the goal, but players can also find O2 canisters in the match, or subsequently buy them at an expensive price on the market before heading into battle.”

This new oxygen system will factor into the gunplay as well, with you experiencing different effects based on where you are shot. As with the likes of Call of Duty, Marathon will also feature perks including “faster revives, less O2 usage, faster movement in the water, etc.”

Perhaps the most exciting reveal from Henderson is the fact that Marathon is being developed with fast loading times in mind – with plans to drop the loading to as little as “single-digit load times”. Destiny 2 suffers from rather lengthy load times, especially when travelling from one planet to the next, and so it is exciting to see that this hopefully will not be the case with Marathon.

Finally, to get a general idea of what players will actually be doing, Henderson spoke on the core gameplay loop for Marathon, revealing it to be as follows:

“Choose your missions (to complete in the game)

  • Buy / Choose your loadout/perks/abilities/gear
  • Drop into a server
  • Hunt for loot / Complete missions / Explore and find secrets
  • Extract
  • Spend XP on Updates
  • Repeat”
