Samsung to showcase new 2560×1600 10 inch panel

Samsung are getting ready to show the world their stunning new 10.1 inch LCD screen which has a staggering resolution of 2560×1600 pixels, normally reserved for 30 inch panels.

Samsung have been hard at work with their partner Nouvoyance to unveil the new WQXGA display next week at the SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium. At this resolution, the panel will have a pixel density of 300 pixels per inch, giving it a resolution within the ‘Retina' specification as set out by Apple boss Steve Jobs in 2010.

The display is using the new RGBW PenTile technology and is expected to become commercially available later this year.

Dr Sungtae Shin, Senior VP of Samsung Electronics said “Samsung’s PenTile display technology is the only display technology that operates at 40 percent less power yet provides twice that of Full HD-viewing performance for consumers compared to legacy RGB stripe LCDs. There is no other commercial display technology on the market today that offers this high of a resolution and pixel density in a 10.1-inch size display.”

Samsung want to focus on the 10.1 inch screen, not the 9.7 inch size that Apple have adopted with their iPad and iPad 2 models. Samsung's first tablet also used a 7 inch screen, so the move is set on increasing the tablet panel sizes down the line. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 currently uses a 1280×800 pixel screen. Samsung have went on paper saying that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 needed to be improved, especially in regards to thickness.

A few weeks later, Samsung showed a redesigned Galaxy tab which was slightly thinner than Apple's iPad 2. Samsung handed out 5,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1's at the recent Google I/O developer conference last week, hoping to drive interest and program creation. It is due for release start of June this year.

There are rumors that this new screen might make its way into the upcoming iPad 3 due for release in 2012. Apple had initially said their In Plane Switching Screen for the next design would run at 2048 x 1536 pixels, so this would be another step up. No mention however has been made of Apple's acceptance of the Samsung PenTile technology.

KitGuru says: Even if Apple don't adopt this new screen, it will make its way into a tablet, either later this year or in 2012.
