Google arming to challenge Facebook

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google are holding talks with gaming companies with the aim to create a new competiting social networking service to go head to head with the ever popular Facebook.

Google have been in discussions with the makers of online gaming which include Electronic Arts Inc's Playfish, Zynga Game Network Inc and Playdom Inc. There are as yet no details as to when this new service might launch.

Google have already dipped their toes into these waters before as they control social networking site Orkut.

Google are facing stiff opposition however as KitGuru reported earlier this week that Walt Disney are already in talks with Playdom for a possible takeover deal estimated to be worth around $600 million. This verifies the ties between ‘casual' online gaming and social networking sites.

KitGuru says: Facebook are well established, any competitior to this service will have a tough climb ahead of them.

  1. I would never discount Google in this market, they have been successful in almost everythign they have touched so far.

  2. Yeah absolutely, anyone else I would say they have no chance of making an impact into the facebook dominated world, but google? they have all the power to tackle them.
