02 are officially the first UK mobile operator to roll out their superfast 3G network. Earlier today the company have started their 900mhz network which is using bandwidth from the old 2G intrastructure … which is no longer needed. This is boosting the speed and capacity to the 3G system, giving customers in London faster downloads and net access.
Ofcom said at the start of the year that they would allow ‘GSM refarming', and other operators are expected to offer a 50 percent increase in current capacity in London, with a 30 percent increase with download speeds. This should be copied across to other major cities in the UK such as Leeds and Birmingham.
Other mobile companies in the UK, such as 3 mobile have complained to this use of 2G within the 3G bandwidth but have since relented as Ofcom plan to cap the amount of bandwidth available under 1GHZ, that a single company can own.
