Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey said that Twitter is now serving 1 billion tweets each week. Twitter have never released detailed information on their platform, but Dorsey wants this to change, highlighting the popularity of the platform.
Dorsey obviously tweeted the information, giving them 1 billion and one tweets this week saying “I've been digging through all my drawings, emails, & notes from around that time. I'll share them over the next 2 weeks right here on #twttr”
To reach 1 billion tweets, it took Twitter three years, two months, and one day which is quite an impressive achievement. On March 12th 2011, 572,000 new Twitter accounts were created, according to Carolyn Penner of Twitter's communications department. On average, there are 460,000 new accounts made each day and the growth in the mobile market has been staggering, at 182 percent.
Last month, 140 million tweets were sent each day, compared to 50 million the year before. When Michael Jackson died on June 25th 2009, 456 tweets per second were recorded, a record at the time. This record was beaten with 6,939 tweets per second four seconds after midnight in Japan on News Years Day this year. When Japan was struck by the earthquake and tsunami, Twitter users sent 177 million tweets in a single day.
KitGuru says: According to the company, Twitter is growing ‘at a record pace'. We aren't going to argue.
