In a three month period between November 2010 and February 2011, ComScore show Android taking another 7 percentage points from 26% to 33% within the US market. Android have taken most of this from Research In Motion who have lost 4.5% from 33.5% to 28.9%.
Android have also taken from share from Microsoft and Palm, despite the fact that Windows Phone 7 launched in the latter part of 2010 and Palm, which are now owned by HP have launched a new smartphone on the Verizon network. Microsoft continue to lose ground, dropping from 9% to 7.7%. Palm have dropped from 3.9% to 2.8%, another loss of more than a single percent in the overall market.
Google continue to grow as more manufacturers adopt the operating system for their smartphone designs. RIM are struggling to release new handsets, with the last significant release in August 2010, with the Torch. RIM have been pushing a lot of their focus into the new Playbook Tablet which has cost them some market share in the segment it used to dominate.
Interestingly Apple seemed to have stalled a little with only minor growth from 25% to 25.2% in the same three month period. With exciting releases from Samsung, Motorola and HTC in the Android market sales are continuing to soar. That said, with the new iPhone due for release in a couple of months, Apple's market could very well grow rapidly and it couldn't come at a better time as indications show their shares are not increasing in the last month.
KitGuru says: The biggest concern is Microsoft, who have launched a brand new platform with Windows Phone 7 and have seen no growth at all.
It deserves to do very well, its a fantastic OS.
