SteelSeries launches wireless XBox 360 headset

At the 2011 Gadget Show at the Birmingham NEC, lots of companies seem to have paid tens of thousands of pounds to show the same kind of product you can find in a high street shop. Strange. However, KitGuru spies were searching high and low for new kit – and some seem to have been successful.

SteelSeries might be more famous for pro-class keyboards, mice and Munchner Halle fight scenes, but they also have a fine line in licenced products.

Last year, it was all about the StarCraft II. At the Gadget Show 2011, it was the turn of Microsoft and the XBox 360. Apparently, bouncing around your living room like a loon – dancing to hooj choons – blasting from your TV – driven by the power of your Kinect – is not quite enough.

SteelSeries would like you to engage in the madness in complete silence. Well, external silence at least.

Cue the high-quality wireless XBox 360 headset.

Here, captured on stealth-cam, is the moment that the brand new device was unwrapped by an excited youth.

KitGuru says: It can be a real irritation to trail a headphone chord around when gaming – well played SteelSeries!

  1. Well it seems Microsoft updated their controllers, so with the purchase of the new Xbox 360 Slim I decided to pick up an extra controller.

Pros: Compared to the older controllers, the new one seems to be constructed stronger, as in theres no creeks or unwanted noises. The controller just really feels like a solid piece and very sturdy. Triggers seem to spring up more crisply than before, no wobbling from side to side either. One big plus was the battery life which seemed to be greatly updated. Before I use to get maybe a week tops of good gaming (15 hours a week) but they now seem to go 4+ weeks on regular Duracell Coppertop batteries. This was one big improvement and one important selling point that persuaded me to get the updated controller. Besides all that, they went ahead and got rid of the grey joysticks for more favorable all black look, look’s much better being completely blacked out.

Cons: Well I seem to have found two issues that you might want to check when you get your controllers as these issues vary. The first one is the battery compartment on the back, where you insert the battery, tends to be a little loose on SOME controllers, not all. If you do have this issue all it takes is a phone call to Microsoft and they will send out a new battery cover attachment. The other issue was with the right joystick. Sometimes, not always, at rest it doesn’t exactly stay at center and sticks just a hair to the left which turns the aiming slightly left in games. I’m hoping it’ll go away with breaking in the controller but if not a simple phone call to Microsoft will land you a new controller.

Overall I highly suggest the new controller, it might have some issues but then again only a certain amount of controllers do not all of them. Plus the battery life upgrade is a huge plus.
