In the interests of pushing hardware sales, Nintendo have committed to deliver an updated Wii Console which will be shown at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles in June.
Nintendo have made this announcement after showing financial figures which show huge percentage drops in sales over the last twelve months. The firm is keen to show new technology and that sales will be boosted in 2011 and 2012. The Wii has seen a huge drop in sales as people adopt the Sony and Microsoft high definition consoles with open arms.
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has declined to offer any details during a news conference, saying “We have decided that it is best to let people experience it for themselves at E3. So I won't talk about specific details today, but it will offer a new way of playing games within the home.”
The Wii was a success in the first few years, but it has had a tougher time competng with the PS3 and Xbox 360, especially as Microsoft's Kinect controller has been such a huge success. People are also seeing the quality of graphics available in high definition which is causing a decline in sales for Nintendo.
The technical data on the console has been leaked however, although no confirmation has obviously came from Nintendo themselves. It looks to be based around an updated AMD R700 GPU and will have an IBM PowerPC triple core CPU and motherboard, similar to the one in the Xbox 360, but rumors indicate that clock speeds will be much better. The console is said to output 3D with 1080p high definition video support.
More information will come to light at the E3 Expo at June 7th-9th in Los Angeles. Or if more information leaks beforehand.
KitGuru says: Nintendo finally embracing the high definition sector, its long overdue.
Its about time they went HD, years after their competitors. I knew the good initial sales wouldnt hold, not with the competition offering so much more.
uh, dude, what are you talking about? it’s been a full (traditional) console cycle since the wii launched 5 years ago. Wii won this generation, hands down.
The so-called “next gen” consoles, ya know, aren’t next gen anymore. They’re actually quite dated technology.
MS and Sony simply jumped the gun tech wise and their lack of true innovation hurt them (especially Sony, MS less so since Xbox live is awesome). So now while MS and Sony try and play catch up to the Wii, the Big N is moving on to bigger and better (and more innovative) things.
