PSN downtime causes fury with Sony gaming audience

The continued problems with the official Playstation Network are beginning to annoy customers who have been unable to use many of the services. Letters have been sent into many publications from people who are still unable to get access to the network.

Patrick Seybold of Sony posted on the PS blog “We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.”

“I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don't have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time.

“As we previously noted, this is a time-intensive process and we're working to get them back online quickly. We'll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience.”

Sony gamers are not a happy bunch right now, and letters and support forums highlight the growing anger from people who are paying for services. Todd Kroeker from Canada said It's not only the yearly cost that's at stake here, it's also the money invested in games like “Maddens Ultimate Team,” which is part of the Madden 2011 game. It costs money to purchase cards that are players on your team.

To be successful you have to buy and resell cards to make coins and post these cards in an auction house, which costs coins as well.

For example, I had 25 player cards posted on Wednesday evening that cost me 200,000 coins to post for three days. The next morning I get up, and the servers are down and I have no access to remove, which means people also have no access to buy. This has now cost me an additional $50 (200 000 coins) and the CSR's at Playstation Network have no intent to reimburse me.

This has happened three times since Aug. 10, 2011, but not for this long a period of time. I would certainly hope that Sony would want to right a wrong, but they won't, because they don't care much about the consumer, regardless of what they say. I told them it was like paying for entrance to a theme park for three days, but the gates never opened. Would you think Disney would reimburse the customer? Of course. This is kind of a corny comparison, but none the less accurate.”

KitGuru says: Rumours have been circulating that well known hacking team Anonymous, or a subset of the core team may be partially responsible. Sony have not issued detailed information on the extent of the problems that they have been experiencing, which seems to be annoying customers even more.
