The chairman of the Invest St. Paul, Luciano Almeida has said that Apple are going to be producing their tablets and mobile phones in Brazil. The manufacturing will be handled by Taiwan's Foxconn.
The Invest St. Paul is the agency of the State government responsible for acquiring expansion and investment in Sao Paulo. Almeida has said that six million of these products will be made each year when the plant reaches full capacity in a period of 3 to 4 years. They will be using up to 5,000 employees in the first stages of manufacturing. “There will be no production. Foxconn is an assembler of products,” he said.
Apples investment means that Foxconn can step up their operations and enhance the overall production within the country. “Five or six cities are competing for investment” he said.
Apple products being produced in Brazil will be a huge boost for the economy over the coming years and it is the first in a three stage development process to grow the manufacturing capabilities. There are even plans to expand to liquid screen displays by investing in the construction of a factory. Total investment could be as much as $12 billion over the coming years.
