Latest firmware hoses older Xbox 360, Microsoft replacing

Microsoft have made a rather big mistake with the release of the latest Xbox 360 firmware which hasn't been compatible with all versions of the console. A small portion of the user base have reported that after the update the console was no longer working correctly.

Microsoft have stepped in quickly offering to replace the consoles which have been affected by the latest update. Microsoft spoke to Eurogamer and said “Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs. This issue manifests itself a as a unique ‘disc unreadable' or ‘disc unsupported' error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console.”

People who have noticed a problem after updating have been instructed to contact Microsoft directly for replacement.

Microsoft sent out the update to ensure support for an updated disc format for the console which can add another 1GB of usable data to the Xbox disc structure, allowing game developers to add more content onto the DVD. Microsoft will replace the older consoles with the new 250GB slim version and they are also giving away one YEAR free Xbox Live.

Microsoft are well aware of the recent negative coverage that Sony received for their slow actions regarding the Playstation Network hack, so this will be seen as a quick and generous gesture for their user base.
