Apple working on an iPad 2 ‘Plus’?

We have been reporting on the possibility that Apple may update their iPad 2 later this year. According to the International Business Times, they feel that Apple may be working on a successor, but it won't be called the iPad 3.

The report is based around a note that FBR Capital Markets Analyst Craig Berger wrote to clients. He said “There are some indications from the supply chain that Apple may look to introduce an ‘iPad 2 Plus' device as they put out request for quotes from various component suppliers for this marginally different device.”

The time frame looks to be similar to initial rumours that Apple would release the iPad 3 later this year.

Berger added in his report “We now hear that component makers have received request-for-quotes (RFQs) from Apple for an ‘iPad 2 Plus,' though no production schedule has yet been confirmed with suppliers.” One of the more interesting aspects of the report is that Apple may change the screen technology from 132 pixels per inch resolution to 250-300 ppi for the iPad 2 ‘Plus'.

Why would Apple want to create such a confusing naming system for what has been so streamlined to date? It could be that they are wanting to augment their sales figures by releasing a ‘deluxe' version, until the fully fledged iPad 3 hits retail next year. It could help boost sales at the end of the year, coming up to Christmas and it would also mean that die hard Apple fans would sell their current iPad 2 and repurchase the ‘Plus' version.

Kitguru says: Right now most of the commentary seems to be based on speculation and supply chain reports, but it would certainly be an interesting addition to the Apple range.
