ARM say ‘no surprise’ on news of upcoming Intel chip design

British chip maker ARM have spoken to the Telegraph in the UK after hearing about Intel's new chip announcement.

Shares in the Cambridge based ARM, a company who design chips for Apple and other smartphone manufacturers dropped badly midweek as investors were waiting on an announcement from Intel.

Intel said that it will start producing and installing 3D transistors to improve the speed and power of smartphones and tablets. On Thursday ARM shares climbed back a little, rising 9 to 567p.

Ian Drew, ARM's executive vice president for marketing said “For us, this announcement has come as no surprise as we know that Intel, and the industry as a whole, has been working on this technology for a number of years. You always have to watch the competition, but we are confident that the strength of the ARM ecosystem is robust enough to compete.”

KitGuru says: The Intel threat however is serious, their new chip designs will cost less and use less power and will target ARM directly in the mobile sector.

  1. Chip maker? Ha! the only chips they make are the ones they have wiv their Fish n Chips on a friday nite. However they do design the arm core, which is licensed out to others, who add various bits, and stick it in things like disk drives, smart-phones, SSD, NAS and a myriad other devices.
