iPhone 5 to have same screen size?

There have been many rumors around the upcoming release of the iPhone 5. One of the key discussion points has been the size of the new screen.

Some analysts have claimed that Apple will need to increase the size of the iPhone 5 screen to fend off tough threats from the barrage of Android power phones flooding the market in recent months. HTC in particular have been focusing on 4.3 inch screens with their Holiday and Thunderbolt phones. Going on inside sources, it would seem that the next generation of Android phones will be using a 4.5 inch screen.

Others claim that the current size is ‘about right'. After all the doomed Dell Streak, used a 5 inch screen and it didn't prove popular at all, with many people claiming it was just too bulky to carry about all the time.

The iPhone 4 screen: just the right size?

One of the latest reports from a Wall Street analyst read “iPhone 5 component orders increased for FQ4 (Sept.) and FQ1 (Dec.); timing of orders continues to suggest an October launch. FQ4 orders for iPhone 5 increased ~700k; timing continues to suggest an Oct. launch. iPhone 5 screen size likely to be same as iPhone 4” – this was sourced from Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves – who sent the note to clients.

According to this ‘find' it would seem unlikely that Apple would increase their 3.5 inch screen size to 4 or 4.3 inches. Are they afraid of making the phone too big?

Kitguru says: Is 3.5 inch just the right size or would you like the iPhone 5 to sport a 4.3 inch touch screen?

  1. The Dell Streak raises a good point, when is ‘too big’ too big! The 5 inch screen was great, but it was huge. Unless Apple could make it lighter and sexier looking, I dont think anything over 4 inches is needed for a phone.

  2. 5 inches is pretty extreme though… My trophy has 0.3″ over the touch and this real estate is certainly noticeable, without too much extra bulk.

  3. Apple could make their phone the size of an iPad and people would still buy the thing. Once you go Apple you aren’t allowed to buy anything else :).

  4. THEY SHOULD DEFINITELY GO TO 4IN but not more… 4 should be the limit..

I have a 4inch phone as my first smartphone and the Iphone LOOKS TINY when my friends take theirs out!.

But it is my FIRST SMARTPHONE so I am used to 4.in as my standard. Apple people are completely in love with there 3.5in screen no matter what.. If they go 4 – then they will be in love with that.. But I don’t think Apple will go to 4in now.. NOT because of any technical reason BUT BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT TO LOOK LIKE FOLLOWERS. Apple gets most of its power by making sure they are “the coolest kid in the block” and you are not cool if you are being a follower. So they will keep the screen size the same and then talk some smack about how 4in screens are “totally wrong and stupid and we think the 3.5in screen is the FUTURE..” and bla bla.. and people will love that thinking it is real but really it is just expert level marketing. the same marketing a guy does when you are talking to a girl at the club and you go: Yea basketball players are alright but they are kind of immature and don’t know how to act outside of the court when around people… 😛 when you kind of see her alittle interested in some basketball player guy in the other end of the room.. That is what Jobs is doing and being excellent at it.. It is one of the things that makes him really good.. is constantly being an opinion leader.

I think 4 inch would be perfect.. nothing more nothing less .. but apparently all the sources do say the same.. so I would have to go with another phone.. that Nokia Sea Ray looks pretty sweet.. 🙂

  5. Perhaps new iPhone 5 will be a White iPhone. It will have a 4 inch touch screen which is an upgrade over the 3.5 inch displays from the previous iPhone. It is fine.
