Are you finding many tablets in the UK too expensive? Well the new Aakash tablet which is due to be released in India will sell for around £25 (1,750 rupees). The government are planning to support the tablet as a low cost way to help improve education in the country.
The Aakash tablet is a 7 inch design, manufactured by Canada's DataWind Ltd in partnership with the Indian Government. It is the cheapest tablet in the world and will be powered by Google's excellent Android operating system. With up to 32 GB of storage available it seems well equipped, especially when factoring in the dual USB port structure.
India's minister for communications and information technology Kapil Sibal said “The poor and ordinary have been excluded. Aakash will end that digital divide”.
India is steadily growing, with Apple's iPad holding 60% of the market there already, Samsung are in second place with a very credible 25% marketshare. With the launch of the £25 tablet, many people with reduced income are going to be enjoying the pleasures of mobile computing. Research claims that 8% of India's population are currently ‘online capable', which would translate to around 100 million users.
