Super Mario Bros. Wonder had no development deadline

Nintendo recently hosted a Direct dedicated to the upcoming 2D platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder, showing off all manner of new and creative ideas set to be unleashed upon its arrival late next month. The game’s director has now weighed in on all that was shown, revealing that the game was given unlimited dev time among other creative freedoms.

In an interview conducted by Wired, Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s producer Takashi Tezuka and director Shiro Mouri spoke on all manner of topics. One of the most interesting revelations was the fact that the game was essentially given unlimited dev time especially during the prototyping phase, with Tezuka saying “I wanted to prevent people from saying, ‘We won't make that deadline, so that's why we didn't do it—we can't do it.”

One of the most surprising new features set to arrive with the upcoming platformer is its addition of ‘Badges’ – adding whole new and genuinely game changing mechanics such as invisibility; a grapple; enhanced jump and dozens more.

Speaking on the carefully considered implementation of badges and the fact that you can only apply one at a time, Tezuka explained this limitation, claiming that using multiple badges at once “felt more like maybe something that you would see in a Zelda title. It didn't really feel very Mario-esque … Mario gameplay is a lot more straightforward and simple.”

Even so, the addition of badges alone will make for much more replayable levels thanks to just how much each one affects the world and level design. However it is safe to say that all the careful considerations made by both Takashi Tezuka and Shiro Mouri regarding Super Mario Bros. Wonder seems to have led to a genuinely fresh and new Mario experience.
