Overclocker finally breaks the 4GHz barrier with RTX 4090

Splave, an experienced overclocker, has achieved impressive results using the yet-to-be-released Asus RTX 4090 ROG Matrix GPU. For the first time, someone was able to overclock a graphics card above the 4GHz barrier.

During the overclocking process, the Asus RTX 4090 ROG Matrix reached an impressive clock speed of 4,005 MHz on the GPUPI benchmark, as seen on the HWBOT entry (via VideoCardz). The GPU temperature reading was recorded at -34.6°C, which is only expected considering Splave used LN2 to cool the chip. To sustain such high clock speeds, the RTX 4090 requires over 1000 watts of power. Unfortunately, the exact power consumption for these results was not disclosed.

It's important to note that the GPUPI benchmark focuses on calculating the number pi and does not directly reflect modern 3D graphics performance. However, due to the light workload, processors can achieve higher clock speeds, which is why world records are often established with this benchmark rather than others like 3DMark.

It's worth mentioning that the 3.0GHz barrier was broken nearly three years ago using an RTX 2080 Ti graphics card. Although the Ada-based GPUs come with higher clock speeds than their predecessors, reaching 4.0GHz proved to be no easy task. It has been eight months since Nvidia released the RTX 4090, but only now was someone finally able to break the 4GHz barrier.
